Dear Parents,
On Friday, October 4th, Vanderlyn will be hosting our annual “Vocabulary Parade!”. We are adding a “new twist” to the usual costumed Vocabulary Parade by featuring a Vocabulary Hat! Each student will select a word and be assigned to make a hat representing that word and its meaning. Each student will display their hat and a sentence using the word on October 4th during the parade. It can be any kind of hat such as a baseball cap, floppy cap, or even a paper hat! THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX AND BE CREATIVE! You and your child should start to brainstorm their ideas so that planning for this event can begin. Students should have hats completed and brought to school on Friday, October 4th. It’s important that the hats are not breakable or too heavy.
What is special about this year’s event? This year, our school will partner with The Heavenly Hats Foundation(TM), a non-profit organization, who collects and distributes brand new hats of all kinds to those heroes of all ages who lose their hair due to the treatment of cancer or the many other medical conditions which may cause hair loss. The Heavenly Hats Foundation(TM) was founded by teenager, Anthony Leanna, when he was only 10 years old. Since its beginning in 2001, Heavenly Hats(TM) has distributed more than 4,500,000 brand-new hats to hundreds of hospitals and clinics around the United States. We are asking all students to donate $1 on the day of the parade to this very worthy cause. All proceeds from this event will be donated directly to the Heavenly Hats Foundation to help pay for the costs that are involved with shipping all of the new head-wear to patients and hospitals across the United States. Donations will be collected on parade day by the homeroom teacher. No child will be excluded if they do not make a donation.
This will be an outdoor event and parents, as spectators, are invited to attend.
The parade will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the front sidewalk of the school.

Costumes:
- Costumes should feature hats, but can also include poster board with straps, sandwich boards (front and back poster board), or other props. Just remember that all items should be “safe” items! If students are riding the school bus, please make sure that costumes fit easily on the bus for travel. Hats may not be worn on the school bus.
- Your costume may be any creative interpretation of the word (literal or silly). If it is best displayed and defined by more than one person, students may have a partner. For example, “congruent – the same size and shape” might be illustrated by students dressed in matching outfits.
- Include your vocabulary word and definition on the hat.
- Students may choose their own vocabulary word. Choose words that are age-appropriate, but also expand the students’ vocabulary.
- Compound words lend themselves to creativity: catfish, rainbow, butterfly, mailbox, houseplant…
- “Sound alike” words are another great source of fun, creative ideas! (Especially for younger children):
- Homonyms – Spelled the Same
- Homophones – Spelled Differently
- Example: bare/bear – The bear with no fur is bare!
- Nouns (person, place or thing) would be great starting places for kindergarteners!
- Adjectives – dress in clothing that illustrates your word (shimmery, glistening, …)
- Teachers and parents of older students may offer a list of “robust vocabulary” words the students are studying this year. Words can be associated with: math, science, social studies, ELA, music, art, health, etc.
