About the Teacher:
Welcome to first grade! I'm Hilary Hunter and am so excited to be your child's teacher this year! This is my fifth year at Vanderlyn Elementary and my fourth year teaching first grade. I love the Vanderlyn community so much and enjoy watching our first graders learn and grow throughout the school year. I also enjoy watching movies, photography, traveling, and swimming. I am originally from Savannah, GA where I received my Master of Arts in Teaching Early Education degree from Armstrong State University. I have worked in Pre-K through third grade classes. I am so pleased to now be working with such a wonderful group of first graders! Daily Communication: Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or feedback throughout the school year. Parent-teacher communication is vital for a successful year! My email is [email protected]. Please call the office at (678) 874-9002 if there is an emergency. You may also check out this site, which can be accessed from Vanderlyn's staff page, for blog posts, useful links such as weekly updates, spelling words, homework, class photos, and more! Each student should have a communication binder. Your child will bring it home every day. Homework, calendar, weekly newsletters, and other communications will be sent home in this folder. Please send any notes, dismissal changes, corrected assignments, and money back to me in this folder. VIP papers (Vikings Important Papers) will be sent home every Thursday in the folder. These will include school wide communications and all graded work. VIPs must be signed and returned the following day (Friday). Weekly newsletter updates will go home in your child's communication binder on Mondays. This update will contain the topics we will be studying in each subject. It will also have the spelling words for the week. Homework will go home on Monday as well, and it is due back on Friday. The homework will be a review of a math or reading skill. Spelling tests are on Fridays, so I expect that the children will study their spelling words throughout the week |
Curriculum:
I will be using the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) this year to guide daily instruction. These standards will provide a consistent framework to guide students through the year and prepare them for success in future grade levels, college and/or the 21st century workplace. The standards are designed to help your child develop higher order thinking skills, make real world connections, and promote student-centered learning. You may access the standards at https://www.georgiastandards.org.
